Memories of the Past - E. Pauline Johnson

This painting depicts the Monument to poet Pauline Johnson in Stanley Park, Vancover, B.C. in which Pauline Johnson herself appears in spirit form at the base of the monument, while two Native on lookers reflect on her life. The montage of images around the monument were also done as individual seperate paintings and were inspired by the following Pauline Johnson works: "Legend of Qu'Appelle", "The Cattle Thief", and "As Red Men Die". C.F. Highfield and wife Daisy Julia had heard Pauline Johnson recite her poetry a few years before Johnson's death in 1913.

This painting was painted around 1935, and appears page 99 of volume 1 of the Paintings of Charles F Highfield Authoured by Daisy Lloyd Highfield (1914-1990).
